One of the most common questions we receive from prospective residents is about benefits — specifically, whether they can use Universal Credit or Housing Benefit to cover the cost of supported accommodation. The short answer is yes, in most cases.
Universal Credit
Universal Credit is a monthly payment that combines several older benefits into one. It includes a housing element which can be used to pay your rent. If you are in supported accommodation, the housing element is calculated differently from standard housing — it is usually higher to reflect the additional support costs.
Housing Benefit
Some people, particularly those over pension age or in temporary or supported accommodation, may still claim Housing Benefit rather than Universal Credit. If you are unsure which applies to you, our team can help you work it out.
Claiming while in supported housing
When you move into a Resource Housing property, we will assist you in setting up or transferring your benefit claim. Our support workers are experienced in navigating the benefits system and can accompany you to appointments if needed.
What if my claim is delayed?
Delays in Universal Credit payments are common, particularly at first. We work with residents to manage any short-term gaps and can advise on advance payment options available from the DWP.
